UDO-2 (Ultra Density Optical) is the latest generation
of optical storage technology, providing 60GB
per optical platter with a roadmap to 120GB by
2009 and 240GB by 2012.
By providing backward read compatibility to
30GB UDO media, the new 60GB UDO drives and future
120GB and 240GB UDO drives will ensure investment
protection by eliminating the need for data migrations
to higher density media.
For applications requiring authenticity and protection
against deliberate or accidental modification
or destruction of data, UDO media is available
in a WORM (Write-Once Read-Many) format. Once
data is written to a write-once UDO platter, the
molecular structure of the media goes through
an alteration process that cannot be changed or
reversed. Due to the permanency of the recording
process, as well as performance improvements over
other optical media types, UDO has set a new standard
for speed, reliability, and security for a professional
data archiving medium.
For applications that do NOT require storing
data permanently, UDO media is available in an
RW (Rewriteable) format. Using rewriteable UDO,
the recording process of the media can in fact
be reversed to allow deletions of data and re-claim
storage capacity on the platter.
In addition to the capacity, performance, and
security improvements over other media types,
Ultra Density Optical boasts a shelf life in excess
of 50 years, providing long-term storage for any
data type across any application.
When choosing UDO as a data archive medium, automated
libraries offer capacities that range from 1.4TB
to 38TB of archival storage in a single library,
and can be hosted by any Windows, UNIX, or Linux
operating system.
With an 80% cost reduction in media, UDO offers
greater performance and data security over Magneto-Optical
storage, while offering a total-cost-of-ownership
that rivals DVD and tape.
