QStar Network Migrator is an Information Lifecycle
and File Migration utility that monitors the file
systems of departmental and application servers, and
migrates files to an archive server that hosts an
Optical Library or Tape Library with QStar HSM or
Data Director.
By providing “policy-based” data archiving
and deletions at an enterprise level, server disk
space can be extended to a storage server to provide
a long-term archive for infrequently used files, forming
a tiered storage architecture that maximizes disk
space utilization on the monitored servers, in addition
to reducing backup times and storage requirements.
Highlights of QStar Network
Migrator
Data migration policies can
be defined from either one or a combination of the
following administrator-defined
criteria:
Date/Time Stamp Criteria
Files can be automatically
migrated to a QStar HSM Volume based on Creation
Date or Modification Date,
such as 180 days from the creation date, or 90
days from the last modification of files. This
type of
file migration policy would ensure that all recently
created and accessed files remain on server hard
disk for fast access, while moving less-frequently
access
files to an Optical library for near-line storage.
File Extension Criteria
Files can be
automatically migrated to a QStar HSM Volume based
on File Extension, such as all files
with a TIF or PDF extension. Alternatively, a
file exclusion rule can be created that will migrate
all
files except those with a certain file extension,
such as EXE and DLL.
File Size Criteria
Files can be automatically migrated
to a QStar HSM Volume when they are larger than,
smaller than, or
between the range of two file sizes. This type
of file migration policy would ensure that only
files
of a certain size are migrated to the archive.
Disk Space Usage
Files can be automatically migrated
to a QStar HSM Volume when a certain disk space
threshold is
reached,
such as when available space falls to 10GB on
the monitored file system. This type of file migration
policy would ensure that remaining server hard
disk
space never reaches full capacity causing an “Out
of Disk Space” error message.
Purge Policies and QStar Network Migrator
In addition to automated file migration from a source
file or application server to an archive server hosting
an Optical Library or Tape Library, the QStar Network
Migrator can also manage retention policies by deleting
files that meet a “purge policy”.
As with the automated file migration policies described
above, purge policies can be defined by either one
or a combination of the following administrator-defined
criteria:
Time Based
Files can be automatically
purged from a QStar HSM Volume based on a date/time
stamp, such as 3 years
from the creation date of the file. This type
of purge policy would be essential to organizations
wishing
to destroy files that have met their legal retention
period for regulatory compliance.
Extensions
Files can be automatically
purged from a QStar HSM Volume based on the File
Extension, such as all files
with a TMP extension. This type of purge policy
would ensure that Temporary Files created by Microsoft
Office
and other applications are not written to the
archive.
File Size
Files can be automatically purged from
a QStar HSM Volume based on File Size. This
type of purge policy
would ensure that large files do not consume unnecessary
amounts of primary disk storage or archive storage.
