Ultra
Density Optical (UDO)
UDO-2 is the latest generation of 5¼”
Optical media and provides a capacity of 60GB per
platter with a roadmap to 120GB in 2009 and then to
240GB by 2012. UDO-2 provides true unalterable Write-Once
(WORM) archiving that will meet data archive and retention
requirements for all regulatory agencies. Optical
libraries configured with this generation of UDO drives
offer capacities that range from 1.4TB to 38TB in
a single library.
Blu-ray
Disc (BD)
Blu-ray is the next generation of optical disc format
for the delivery of high-definition video to the consumer
electronics marketplace, and for the delivery of high-density
data storage to the commercial marketplace. Using
the same 120mm form factor as CD and DVD, storage
capacities of current generation Blu-ray media are
25GB per disc (single-layer) and 50GB per disc (dual-layer),
on a single-sided medium, and drives are 100% backward
read/write compatible with all known CD and DVD formats.
Digital
Versatile Disc (DVD)
Digital Versatile Disc, originally developed to deliver
audio and video content for home entertainment, has
become widely used as an archive medium due to its
capacity, cost, versatility, and transportability.
DVD offers current capacities of 4.7GB per single-sided
disc and 9.4GB per dual-sided disc. DVD libraries
configured with the current generation of Multi-Function
DVD Drives offer capacities ranging from 470GB to
over 20TB in a single library.
Magneto-Optical
(M-O)
Magneto-Optical has been a widely-used archival medium
since its introduction in 1988. Having progressed through
five successful generations with capacity increases
from 650MB initially to 9.1GB in 2001, M-O media has
been used across industries demanding long-term, secure,
reliable storage. Optical libraries configured with
the current generation of M-O drives offer capacities
that range from 220GB to 5.8TB in a single library.
